Federal, Sindh Governments Announce Ashura Holidays

Islamabad: The federal government and the Sindh government have announced official holidays across the country on June 25 and 26, 2026, on the occasion of Ashura Day. These holidays have been given in connection with 9th and 10th Muharram 1448 Hijri, which have great importance in Islamic history.

According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Secretariat, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved official holidays on 9th and 10th Muharram, which will fall on June 25 and 26 respectively. After this announcement, there will be a two-day holiday in federal institutions and government offices, while essential services will continue as usual.

On the other hand, the Sindh government has also officially announced two-day holidays across the province on the occasion of Ashura. The notification issued by the Chief Secretary Sindh states that all offices under the provincial government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions, corporations and local bodies will remain closed on June 25 and 26, however, institutions providing essential services will be exempted.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year and is observed by Muslims around the world, especially Shiites, with devotion, respect and mourning. The Day of Ashura commemorates a significant event in Islamic history, the Battle of Karbala, where Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions made great sacrifices for the cause of truth and justice in 680 AD.

Majalis, processions and religious gatherings are held across the country during Muharram. Every year, the federal and provincial governments take special steps to ensure security and administrative arrangements so that a safe environment is provided to the mourners and participants of the procession.

According to sources, instructions are being issued to security agencies in various provinces to remain on high alert, while arrangements are also being made regarding the routes of the processions, traffic plans and medical facilities.

Religious and social circles have welcomed the announcement of the holidays, saying that the Day of Ashura teaches Muslims patience, perseverance, sacrifice and standing firm on the truth. He urged the public to promote an atmosphere of religious harmony, tolerance and unity during Muharram.

Following the announcement of holidays by the government, educational institutions, government offices and several business centers will remain closed for two days, while details regarding the working hours of banks and other institutions will be issued by the relevant authorities.
