On the other hand, the Sindh government has also officially announced two-day holidays across the province on the occasion of Ashura. The notification issued by the Chief Secretary Sindh states that all offices under the provincial government, autonomous and semi-autonomous institutions, corporations and local bodies will remain closed on June 25 and 26, however, institutions providing essential services will be exempted.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year and is observed by Muslims around the world, especially Shiites, with devotion, respect and mourning. The Day of Ashura commemorates a significant event in Islamic history, the Battle of Karbala, where Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions made great sacrifices for the cause of truth and justice in 680 AD.

Majalis, processions and religious gatherings are held across the country during Muharram. Every year, the federal and provincial governments take special steps to ensure security and administrative arrangements so that a safe environment is provided to the mourners and participants of the procession.

According to sources, instructions are being issued to security agencies in various provinces to remain on high alert, while arrangements are also being made regarding the routes of the processions, traffic plans and medical facilities.

Religious and social circles have welcomed the announcement of the holidays, saying that the Day of Ashura teaches Muslims patience, perseverance, sacrifice and standing firm on the truth. He urged the public to promote an atmosphere of religious harmony, tolerance and unity during Muharram.

Following the announcement of holidays by the government, educational institutions, government offices and several business centers will remain closed for two days, while details regarding the working hours of banks and other institutions will be issued by the relevant authorities.
