Islamabad : Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has stated that Pakistan contributes 20% to the global drug seizures, ranking among the leading nations in combating narcotics.

While addressing the Senate, he highlighted the region’s long-standing history of drug cultivation and production, which has persisted for centuries. He noted that earlier laws prescribed lenient penalties for drug offenses, but significant progress was made in 1997 with the introduction of stricter legislation.

Under these laws, Pakistan has successfully seized 133 metric tons of narcotics, and 800 suspects have been arrested. However, the minister acknowledged gaps in addressing rehabilitation for drug addicts and ensuring swift punishment for offenders.

“We have made strides in seizures but remain behind in rehabilitating addicts and ensuring effective penalties,” Tarar admitted. He assured lawmakers that he would raise the issue with the Prime Minister and push for greater provincial involvement to improve drug control measures and rehabilitation initiatives.

The minister’s remarks underline the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to address both drug trafficking and its social consequences, emphasizing prevention, strict enforcement, and rehabilitation programs as critical areas for improvement.
