Trust in Allah
It is human nature to place trust and confidence in someone. Sometimes that trust is placed in a friend, a brother or a relative. Generally, however, people seek support from someone they consider stronger and more capable than themselves. If a person truly believes that there is a Being in whose hands is everything, who has power over every difficulty and nothing is beyond His authority, what level would that person’s trust and confidence reach? This is the foundation of the Islamic concept of Tawakkul — placing one’s trust in Allah.
In simple terms, Tawakkul means that a person takes all necessary and legitimate measures within his ability and then entrusts the outcome of his affairs to Allah Almighty. The Quran says:
(Quran 3:159)
This verse makes it clear that Tawakkul does not mean sitting idle. It means making a decision, taking appropriate measures and then placing one’s trust in Allah. A person makes an effort, searches for solutions and fulfils his responsibility, but leaves the ultimate outcome to Allah.
The Quran also reminds believers that their true source of reliance is Allah alone:
(Quran 64:13)
The story of Prophet Yunus (AS) is a powerful reminder of this reality. When he was inside the belly of the fish, he called upon Allah:
(Quran 21:87)
Allah accepted his supplication and delivered him from his hardship. His story reminds us that no matter how difficult circumstances become, a believer should never lose hope in the mercy of Allah.
The life of Prophet Yusuf (AS) is also a remarkable example of patience, perseverance and trust in Allah. He was thrown into a well as a result of his brothers’ actions, later sold into slavery, faced further trials and spent years in prison. Yet Allah eventually opened doors for him that could not have been imagined at the beginning of his ordeal.
The story of Prophet Musa (AS) carries the same lesson. When he and his people faced the sea while Pharaoh’s army approached from behind, the people saw no apparent way of escape. Prophet Musa (AS) said:
(Quran 26:62)
Allah then opened a path through the sea for them. This is Tawakkul: refusing to surrender to despair in difficult circumstances and maintaining the conviction that Allah’s power is far greater than the difficulties visible to us.
Modern human beings are also surrounded by countless worries. Economic difficulties, concerns about employment, family problems, uncertainty about the future and social pressures have made many people anxious and restless. In such circumstances, one may ask: when everything appears dark, how can one truly place one’s trust in Allah?
The answer is that Tawakkul does not mean waiting for difficulties to disappear. It means maintaining trust in Allah while facing those difficulties. A person should make every reasonable effort, make sound decisions, seek advice, use lawful means and then leave the outcome to Allah.
Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
Reference: Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6472, Book 81, Hadith 61.
The narration is also reported in Sahih Muslim.
This hadith further demonstrates the importance of Tawakkul. Genuine trust in Allah keeps a person connected to Him despite fear, uncertainty and hardship. A believer takes the available means but places ultimate reliance upon Allah.
We must also understand that Tawakkul is not the same as laziness. If someone neglects his responsibilities and simply claims that he trusts Allah, that is not the complete meaning of Tawakkul. Islam teaches people to make an effort, fulfil their responsibilities and take appropriate measures while ultimately placing their trust in Allah.
In an age marked by uncertainty, Tawakkul can provide the heart with a powerful source of strength. It teaches a person: I will fulfil my responsibility, I will make every effort within my ability, but I will not place my entire future in my own limited strength. My ultimate trust will remain with the One who knows my past, present and future.
Therefore, Tawakkul should not merely be treated as a religious term. It should become a practical attitude toward life. Taking appropriate measures is our responsibility, making an effort is our duty, and the final outcome belongs to Allah.
When a person accepts this reality sincerely, difficulties may remain, but his heart does not break before them. He remains confident that the Lord who controls the affairs of the universe is not unaware of his own affairs.
This is the essence of Tawakkul upon Allah.
