Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will hear today the application filed by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), in which the possibility of making electricity more expensive under the August fuel price adjustment is being shown.

According to the data, 102.94 billion units of electricity were supplied to distribution companies (DSCOs) during August. The average generation cost of electricity was fixed at Rs 7.31 per unit, but the actual cost increased to Rs 7.50 per unit. On this basis, the CPPA has recommended an increase of 19 paisa per unit.

In terms of energy sources, the most expensive electricity was imported from Iran, which cost Rs 41 per unit. After this, electricity generated from furnace oil was produced at Rs 33 per unit, LNG at Rs 21.73 per unit and gas at Rs 13.43 per unit.

The cost of production from coal also varied. The cost of electricity generated from local coal was Rs 12.01 per unit, while the cost of electricity generated from imported coal reached Rs 14.07 per unit. In comparison, electricity generated from bagasse proved to be the cheapest, which was produced at Rs 9.87 per unit.

Energy experts say that if NEPRA approves the CPPA application, it will put another financial burden on the public, which could further increase the inflation graph.
