Islamabad: Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, while expressing reservations over the proposed constitutional amendments in Azad Kashmir, has said that it is not right to take any major decision in a hurry and this can damage the confidence of the Kashmiri people as well as Pakistan’s stance.
In his statement, he said that constitutional and legal matters should always be discussed seriously and thoughtfully, because these decisions have an impact not only locally but also at the national and international levels. He said that the voters of the 12 seats of Azad Kashmir represent the Kashmiri people and their bond with their land is undeniable, so any proposal to deprive them of representation can be controversial.
Azam Nazir Tarar suggested that a comprehensive constitutional framework should be prepared on this issue and the involvement of the Kashmiri leadership is necessary. He warned that hasty amendments would not only create legal complications but also raise objections as to why the elected institutions are not doing their job.
According to political observers, the Law Minister’s statements indicate that decisions taken without consensus on a sensitive issue like Kashmir can create problems for Pakistan both internally and externally.
