Islamabad: The government has taken a major decision not to import more sugar in view of the abundant sugar reserves in the country. This decision was taken during a review of sugar stocks in the Ministry of National Food Security.

Government officials have confirmed that the existing sugar reserves are sufficient to meet the country’s needs, and no further imports are required. Under this decision, no more sugar will be imported through the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).

Officials say that sugar imports will be limited to existing contracts of 300,000 metric tons, for which orders have already been placed. TCP has been instructed not to import any more sugar beyond these orders.

It should be noted that the government had earlier decided to import 500,000 tons of sugar to meet the possible shortage of sugar in the country. However, after the latest review and availability of ample stocks, this decision has been revised and now further imports have been banned.

This move by the government could also be a positive step for the existing sugar industry and farmers in the country, as it will protect local production.
