The US and Saudi Arabia have signed two important agreements to increase cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy, which are being described as a significant step towards a long-term economic and strategic partnership between the two countries. According to US officials, nuclear non-proliferation and international safety standards are given fundamental importance in the agreements.
According to the US Department of Energy, the agreements were signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. The Department of Energy says that this legal framework will provide the basis for decades of cooperation, through which cooperation in the fields of energy, investment and advanced nuclear technology will be promoted, while also ensuring the implementation of international obligations related to nuclear non-proliferation.
Some international media reports have claimed that in the future, American companies may participate in the establishment of uranium enrichment facilities in Saudi Arabia, but the US Department of Energy has not made any official confirmation in this regard.
The agreement will be presented to the US Congress for review. According to observers, its chances of approval are considered bright in the current political situation.
This development comes at a time when global attention remains on Iran’s nuclear program in the Middle East. The US and its allies have long considered nuclear non-proliferation in the region an important part of their security policy.
Saudi Arabia has made it clear on several occasions that it wants a civil nuclear program for peaceful purposes, keeping in mind the future of energy. On the other hand, some US lawmakers and international experts have also expressed concerns about the potential for uranium enrichment in the past.
