Start of smart metering project: a new era for electricity consumers

Islamabad: Smart metering reforms have been launched in the country, which aims to restore transparency and trust in the electricity system. A spokesperson for the Power Division said that a plan has been launched to install modern smart meters in the discos.

According to the spokesperson, there are currently about 38 million electricity consumers in Pakistan, of which about 80 percent are single-phase consumers. This modern system will ensure accuracy and transparency in the billing process for these consumers.

The Power Division further said that the price of smart meters has been reduced from Rs 20,000 to Rs 15,000, which will provide clear relief to consumers.

The spokesperson said that the government is expected to save about Rs 25 billion every year through a transparent and competitive procurement process.

The announcement said that smart metering will not only modernize the billing system but will also help stabilize the power sector by reducing electricity theft and losses.
