Karachi: The Sindh Healthcare Commission has directed all private hospitals and health institutions in the province to play an effective role in protecting the public in the event of a possible flood and take immediate steps to protect hospitals from water.

According to the commission, alternative sources of electricity, especially generators, should be arranged for emergency, ICU and operation theaters in hospitals so that treatment is not affected in any emergency. It has been further said that comprehensive arrangements should also be ensured for the safe and immediate transfer of patients.

The statement said that all hospitals have been ordered to remain on high alert 24 hours a day, including staff, while instructions have been given to allocate beds in advance for flood victims so that immediate medical facilities can be provided in case of pressure.

The commission warned that the risk of epidemics spreading in flood-affected areas is increasing, so hospital staff should be kept active and coordinated with district health authorities for immediate reporting of cases.

According to health experts, these measures will not only be helpful in treating flood victims but are also very important in controlling epidemics. If hospitals are not prepared in advance, the health system will not be able to withstand the pressure in the event of any major crisis.
