Lahore: The Punjab government has issued a notification extending Section 144 across the province till October 24, under which all types of protests, rallies, sit-ins, meetings and public gatherings will remain completely banned.

According to a spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department, there will also be a complete ban on gatherings of four or more people in public places, while the display of weapons and the use of loudspeakers have been strictly prohibited.

A complete ban has also been imposed on inflammatory speeches, hate speech and distribution of sectarian literature.

According to officials, the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order had recommended the extension of Section 144 in view of the current security concerns, so as to ensure the protection of human lives and property.

The spokesperson clarified that this move has been taken in view of the potential threats of terrorism as public gatherings can become soft targets for miscreants.

The Punjab Home Department has further said that the ban will not apply to wedding ceremonies, funerals and burials, while government officials and court activities are also exempted from this order.
Loudspeakers can only be used for Azan and Friday sermons.

The public has been directed to obey traffic and security laws, avoid unnecessary gatherings and contact the relevant authorities immediately in case of any complaint or emergency.
