Islamabad: It is time for electricity consumers in Pakistan to get rid of overbilling and reading errors. The Prime Minister of Pakistan has formally launched a new and revolutionary feature, “Apna Meter, Apna Reading,” under which consumers will be able to take their own meter readings and upload them on the app of the Ministry of Power Division. The aim of this initiative is to bring transparency to the electricity system and provide consumers with complete control over their monthly bills.

Under this new feature launched by the Prime Minister, consumers will have the facility to take a picture of their meter on a specified date and upload it on the app of the Ministry of Power Division. Based on this reading, their monthly bill will be prepared. This system will specifically provide a solution to long-standing problems such as overbilling, delay in reading, and reading errors.

One important change is that if the consumer provides his/her own reading on the specified day, then the meter reader’s reading will not be given priority. This will not only empower the consumers to keep track of their bills but will also make them the guardians of the reading process.

This system will prove to be extremely beneficial, especially for those consumers who are eligible for government subsidy. For example, the bill for consumers consuming up to 200 units of electricity is around Rs 2,330, but with just one unit increase, the bill reaches Rs 8,104 due to the end of the subsidy. The “Apna Meter, Apna Reading” feature will ensure that the beneficiaries continue to benefit from the subsidy by providing timely readings. According to the announcement, if both the consumer and the meter reader upload the reading, the lower reading will be given priority.

The Prime Minister’s initiative is expected to receive a positive response from the public; however, along with the public response, concerns have also been expressed by meter readers. According to reports, some meter readers are refusing to go for readings due to fear of public backlash or loss of their authority. However, the Ministry of Power Division intends to feed only the readings provided by the consumers through this feature, which will ensure the success of this system.

A feature like “Apna Meter, Apni Reading,” launched by the Prime Minister, will open a new dimension of transparency in Pakistan’s electricity system and empower consumers. It remains to be seen to what extent this system is successfully implemented and what real changes it brings for consumers.
