Karachi: Pakistan is looking to strengthen direct maritime connections from Karachi as port authorities seek to reduce dependence on transshipment and improve the movement of export and import cargo.
A new direct Europe shipping service operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company is scheduled to begin on October 26, according to Karachi Port Trust officials.
KPT has also outlined plans to double direct shipping services by December. The initiative is intended to improve connectivity for traders and reduce delays associated with routing cargo through intermediate ports.
More direct connections could help exporters plan deliveries and improve supply-chain reliability. However, the overall benefit will depend on service frequency, freight rates, vessel availability, and the ability of port infrastructure to handle cargo efficiently.
Port authorities have also highlighted investment in automation and digital operations, alongside road and freight corridor projects intended to improve access to Karachi’s port facilities.
For Pakistan’s trade sector, shipping efficiency matters because delays and handling costs can affect the competitiveness of goods in overseas markets.
The planned expansion offers an opportunity to improve logistics, but the actual savings for businesses will depend on how quickly new services become operational and whether they provide reliable alternatives to existing routes.
