Iran Renews Offer to Mediate Saudi-Yemen Conflict

TEHRAN: Iran has renewed its offer to facilitate dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, calling for a political settlement as renewed hostilities threaten to deepen instability across the region.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has maintained that military action alone cannot resolve the conflict. Tehran says it is prepared to assist efforts to bring the parties to the negotiating table and pursue a political solution.

The latest diplomatic initiative comes amid a sharp escalation in attacks involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. Recent strikes targeting Saudi territory, including Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, have heightened security concerns and disrupted civilian aviation.

Araghchi discussed regional tensions with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on October 11. The conversation marked a significant diplomatic contact between the two countries as violence intensified. Iran subsequently reiterated its willingness to help facilitate dialogue between Riyadh and the Yemeni group.

On October 17, Araghchi again emphasised the need for an inclusive and comprehensive political process, describing it as the only practical and sustainable way to resolve the dispute.

However, Iran’s offer faces considerable diplomatic and political challenges. Saudi Arabia and the Houthis remain divided over security arrangements, the future of Yemen and the conditions required to end hostilities. Tehran’s close relationship with the Houthi movement also raises questions about whether its involvement could secure commitments that both sides would accept.

The renewed initiative comes as the conflict threatens to widen beyond Yemen, increasing concerns about regional security, energy infrastructure and trade routes. Continued attacks could further complicate diplomatic efforts and raise the economic costs of instability across the Middle East.

A sustainable settlement would require more than diplomatic statements. It would depend on a credible reduction in attacks, meaningful negotiations and arrangements that address the security concerns of the parties involved.

For now, Iran has reiterated its readiness to support dialogue, but the prospects for mediation will depend on whether Saudi Arabia and the Houthis are willing to pursue a negotiated settlement.
