Islamabad: A flood alert has been issued in Pakistan after India released water in Harike Lower and Ferozepur Lower in the Sutlej River. The Ministry of Water Resources has warned citizens that the effects of the flood will be seen in the Sutlej as well as the Chenab and Ravi rivers.

According to Indian media, heavy rains in the upper areas have caused flooding in the Chenab River. The gates of the Baglihar Dam and Salal Dam have been opened, which may further increase the intensity of the flood water entering Pakistan. Experts say that this situation is a wake-up call for the public and there is a risk of damage if timely precautions are not taken.

The second major flood wave entering Pakistan from Akhnoor has wreaked havoc in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and is ready to enter Sindh. The Indus River is still in flood condition at Sehwan, and floodwaters have affected residential areas and agricultural lands at several places.

According to climate experts, the release of water from India’s hydropower dams and the effects of climate change have increased the risk of flooding in northern and central Pakistan. Citizens have been advised to be cautious, avoid close proximity to dams and strictly follow safety measures.

This situation once again shows that the severity of climatic and environmental hazards in the region is increasing, and how important the role of timely warning systems and public awareness is.
