Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has stressed immediate access to Imran Khan, his medical treatment, and a joint strategy to eliminate terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to lack of progress in talks with the government.
The party’s statement said that the main difference in the talks came on the issue of immediate consultation with the founder, PTI. The party sought an explanation from the government as to why the obstacle to access to Imran Khan was maintained, even though his opinion on national and political matters is important to the leadership.
The statement also called the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa an important part of the talks. According to PTI, for sustainable peace in the province, it is necessary to take into account the concerns of the local population and ground realities. The party took the stand that political consultation should also be an integral part of an effective strategy along with counter-terrorism operations.
In this regard, PTI has suggested that the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments prepare a joint counter-terrorism policy within 72 hours. It has also demanded that political parties of the provincial assembly and tribal elders be included in this process.
The issue of Imran Khan’s health and treatment was also discussed during the talks. PTI stressed shifting him to Shifa International Hospital and forming a medical board for proper medical examination. According to the statement, the government has expressed its willingness to restore meetings with Imran Khan’s family and lawyers from Tuesday. However, the party says that allowing meetings does not meet the need for medical examination and necessary treatment.
PTI urged the government to bring to the fore the real reasons for the differences instead of blaming the opposition alone for the stalemate in the talks. The party reiterated its demands for access to Imran Khan and a consultative security policy for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to PTI, talks can only be fruitful if all parties recognize each other’s position and avoid demands for preconditions and unconditional support.
