Islamabad: Reacting to the recent statement of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Federal Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif has said that responsibility and caution should be exercised while discussing national institutions and the sacrifices of martyrs. He said that differences of opinion are part of the democratic process; however, it is necessary to avoid such discussions that affect the feelings of the families of martyrs.

In his statement, Khawaja Asif said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman is an influential figure in the country’s politics and religious circles; hence, his words are given extraordinary importance. He said that such personalities are expected to choose their words with utmost responsibility while expressing their views on sensitive national issues.

Khawaja Asif’s response to Maulana Fazlur Rehman, emphasising responsible discussion on martyrs’ sacrifices, the defence minister said that the personnel who sacrifice their lives for the defence of the homeland and the establishment of peace are not just performing professional duties, but they sacrifice under the spirit of their ideology, national responsibility, oath and love for the country. According to him, linking any martyrdom with only financial compensation or salary is not in line with the true spirit of these sacrifices.

He further said that criticism of any policy, strategy or procedure is the right of every citizen and political party; however, in this process, respect for the sacrifices of those who have sacrificed their lives for the security of the country should be maintained.

Khawaja Asif said that Pakistan continues to face the threat of terrorism, and security forces, law enforcement agencies and ordinary citizens have made heavy sacrifices in this war. According to him, such statements about the sacrifices of the martyrs that cause pain to the affected families should be avoided.

At the end of his statement, he said that the requirements of national unity are that political differences should remain in place, but there should be no compromise on respect for martyrs, ghazis, their families and national sacrifices.
