Islamabad: Big news is likely to emerge for electricity consumers across the country in the next few months, as a significant reduction in electricity tariffs is expected.

According to sources, consumers may get a relief of about Rs 1.75 per unit from June to August 2026, while the total reduction may reach Rs 2.15 per unit after the current quarterly adjustment ends. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has called for a public hearing on May 19 on the request of former WAPDA discos.

Electricity distribution companies have applied to refund about Rs 64 billion to consumers under the quarterly adjustment for January to March 2026. According to reports, the main reason for this relief is the reduction in capacity charges paid to power plants, which saved about Rs 37 billion. In addition, billions of rupees were also saved due to the reduction in market operator fees and service charges.

Currently, consumers are paying an additional 42 paisa per unit under the quarterly adjustment for October-December 2025, which will end next month.

After this, a clear reduction in electricity bills is expected with the implementation of negative quarterly adjustment. However, experts say that if fuel prices continue to increase in the global market, some part of this relief may be affected due to the monthly fuel price adjustment.

Faisalabad Electric Supply Company has shown the highest savings of Rs 10.45 billion, while Hyderabad, Peshawar and Lahore Electric Supply Companies have also filed refund applications worth billions of rupees.

After approval from NEPRA, this relief will also be applicable to all DISCOs and K-Electric customers, however, it will not apply to customers benefiting from the government’s special incremental package.
