As the Quran says in Surah At-Tawbah (9:36), “Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months…”
Here is the breakdown of each, their history, and their religious significance.
The Four Sacred Months (Al-Ashhur al-Hurum)
Before looking at the full list, you should know that four months have a special “sanctity” where conflict is forbidden and good deeds carry extra weight: Muharram, Rajab, Dhu al-Qi’dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah.
1. Muharram (The Month of Allah)
- Meaning: “forbidden” or “sacred”.
- History: The Islamic New Year starts here. It marks the month the Prophet migrated to Medina.
- Importance: The 10th day is Ashura. The Prophet said, “The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of Allah, Muharram” (Sahih Muslim).
- Impact: It’s a time of mourning for some (the martyrdom of Husayn) and a time of gratitude for others (Moses being saved from Pharaoh).
2. Safar (The Emptying)
- Meaning: “Empty” or “whistling of the wind.”
- History: In pre-Islamic times, people left their homes to hunt or trade, leaving the city “empty”.
- Importance: The Prophet corrected the myth that Safar is “unlucky”, saying, “There is no [superstition in] Safar” (Bukhari).
- Impact: It teaches that no time is “bad” by itself; our actions define the day.
3. Rabi’ al-Awwal (The First Spring)
- Meaning: “The first spring.”
- History/Importance: This is the month Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was born.
- Impact: It is a month of joy, poetry, and learning about the Prophet’s character (Seerah).
4. Rabi’ al-Thani (The Second Spring)
- Meaning: “The second spring.”
- Impact: A period of consistency and continuing the spiritual momentum gained in the previous month.
5. Jumada al-Ula (The First Dry Month)
- Meaning: “The first parched land.”
- History: Refers to the time when water used to freeze or the land was dry in ancient Arabia.
6. Jumada al-Akhira (The Final Dry Month)
- Meaning: “The end of the dry season.”
- History: Marks the transition toward the more “spiritual” half of the year.
7. Rajab (The Month of Respect)
- Meaning: “To honour.”
- Importance: It is a sacred month. Historically, it is linked to the Isra’ wal-Mi’raj (The Night Journey of the Prophet).
- Impact: It is known as the “Month of Planting”. You start asking for forgiveness now to prepare for Ramadan.
8. Sha’ban (The Month of Separation)
- Meaning: “To disperse” (looking for water).
- Importance: The Prophet fasted most of this month. He said it’s a month people “neglect” because it sits between Rajab and Ramadan.
- Impact: This is the “Month of Watering” the seeds you planted in Raja b.
9. Ramadan (The Scorching Month)
- Meaning: “Intense heat.”
- Quranic Context: The only month mentioned by name in the Quran (2:185).
- Importance: The month of the fasting and the Quran. It contains Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Power).
- Impact: A total spiritual and physical “reset” for the global community.
10. Shawwal (The Uplift)
- Meaning: “To lift or carry.”
- Importance: Starts with Eid al-Fitr.
- Impact: The Prophet encouraged fasting six days in this month to gain the reward of fasting a whole year.
11. Dhu al-Qi’dah (The Month of Truce)
- Meaning: “The month of sitting.”
- History: A Sacred Month. People would stop all work/war to sit and prepare for the pilgrimage.
- Impact: A month of peace and internal preparation.
12. Dhu al-Hijjah (The Month of Hajj)
- Meaning: “The month of pilgrimage.”
- Importance: The first 10 days are the most blessed days of the year.
- Key Events: The Hajj pilgrimage, the Day of Arafah, and Eid al-Adha (the Festival of Sacrifice).

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي حَمْزَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ بَيْنَا أَنَا أَمْشِي، مَعَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ فَقَالَ كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ “ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ، فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَعَلَيْهِ بِالصَّوْمِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ وِجَاءٌ ”.
ہم سے عبدان نے بیان کیا ، ان سے ابوحمزہ نے ، ان سے اعمش نے ، ان سے ابراہیم نے ان سے علقمہ نے بیان کیا کہ میں عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہ کے ساتھ جا رہا تھا ۔ آپ نے کہا کہ ہم نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ تھے تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا اگر کوئی صاحب طاقت ہو تو اسے نکاح کر لینا چاہئے کیونکہ نظر کو نیچی رکھنے اور شرمگاہ کو بدفعلی سے محفوظ رکھنے کا یہ ذریعہ ہے اور کسی میں نکاح کرنے کی طاقت نہ ہو تو اسے روزے رکھنے چاہئیں کیونکہ وہ اس کی شہوت کو ختم کر دیتا ہے ۔
Narrated ‘Alqama:
While I was walking with `Abdullah he said, “We were in the company of the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said, ‘He who can afford to marry should marry, because it will help him refrain from looking at other women, and save his private parts from committing illegal sexual relation; and he who cannot afford to marry is advised to fast, as fasting will diminish his sexual power.”
