Islamabad: The federal government has decided to restructure the country’s sugar sector and has started preparations to completely deregulate the sector. In this regard, a special committee headed by Federal Minister Owais Leghari has prepared comprehensive recommendations, which will be presented to the Prime Minister in the next few days.

According to Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, the government has decided to shift the sugar industry from production to marketing to an independent system. He said that many questions have been raised on the current quota system, so the old rules and quotas for import and export will be completely abolished.

Rana Tanveer said that if the crushing season continues till the first week of December, there will be adequate stock available in the market to meet the demand for sugar. He said that the aim of deregulation is to ensure fair competition among mills, better production and stability in the market.

According to government sources, these decisions are being taken in the wake of crushing delays, rising sugar prices and market uncertainty to avoid artificial crises in the future.
