Islamabad – The federal government has officially overhauled its electric vehicle distribution strategy by introducing interest-free financing and direct subsidies for public sector employees under the second phase of its green mobility initiative.

According to official documents, government employees serving in Grade 16 or below are now eligible to acquire electric bikes or rickshaws with a minimal down payment of only Rs 10,000. The remaining balance for these vehicles will be recovered through manageable, interest-free instalments deducted directly from their monthly salaries, significantly lowering the barrier to entry for low-to-mid-tier civil servants.

This move comes alongside a substantial Rs 80,000 cash subsidy per electric bike, which is designed to be settled directly between the government and manufacturers after the vehicle is delivered to the consumer. In a strategic shift to increase efficiency, the previous balloting system—which saw over 269,000 applicants competing for only 41,000 slots in Phase 1—has been replaced with a “first-come, first-served” mechanism for the upcoming rollout of 100,000 units.

While only 1,334 bikes have been delivered to date, the administration is accelerating the process to ensure that the remaining targeted units reach consumers within the next three months, maintaining a strict provincial quota to ensure equitable distribution across the country.
