Islamabad – The federal government has started preparing the first national policy for the promotion of waste-to-energy projects in the country and has established a high-level task force.

Established with the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the task force aims to develop a clear policy framework, institutional structure and practical strategy for waste-to-energy projects in the country.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the task force will formulate recommendations to promote private sector involvement and increase investment opportunities in this sector.

The task force will be headed by Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Owais Leghari, while it will include Minister for Climate Change Senator Mosaddiq Malik, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani and various federal secretaries.

Furthermore, senior officials from the relevant departments of all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir will also be part of this body, while representatives of the private sector have also been included to include a practical approach in policy making.

According to the official announcement, the task force will review successful waste-to-energy models at the international level and develop a suitable strategy for their implementation in Pakistan.

In addition, the body will identify legal, regulatory, financial and operational barriers that are currently hindering the development of this sector.

The task force’s TORs include legislative and reform proposals and practical recommendations to improve coordination between different institutions and make project implementation effective.

According to experts, this move is being termed as a significant step towards environmentally friendly energy in view of the growing waste crisis and increasing demand for energy in Pakistan.

The government says that this policy will not only create alternative sources of energy but will also help in better management of municipal waste.
