Freedom of the press is the guarantor of democracy, transparent governance, and human rights: Ataullah Tarar


Islamabad: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting In his message on the occasion of World Press Day, Ataullah Tarar said that freedom of the press is the guarantor of democracy, transparent governance, and protection of human rights. He said that media in Pakistan has always played a key role in the consolidation of democracy, the supremacy of law, and the awakening of public consciousness.

Attaullah Tarar paid tribute to the Pakistani media for playing an effective role in highlighting the ongoing brutality in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, serious human rights violations, and Israeli atrocities on the Palestinian people. He said that the journalist community has played a courageous role in shaking the global conscience and taking the voice of the oppressed to global forums.

He added that it is the independent and conscious journalism that is the real spokesperson of human compassion and truthfulness. The federal minister appreciated the media’s cautious, responsible, and national interest in responding to India’s aggressive actions. He said Pakistan’s media was effectively highlighting the state position globally, which was vital for national security, foreign policy, and national integration.

Ataullah Tarar said that the government of Pakistan fully believes in freedom of expression. All media organizations have the right to carry out their professional duties independently. Freedom of expression and access to information are the hallmarks of any democratic society. He said the government is taking all possible steps for the safety, welfare, and professional training of journalists.
