Interbank Currency Rates Today in Pakistan – 22 August 2026

August 22, 2026

The interbank market is closely watched by businesses and financial institutions. Changes in this rate can affect import costs, external payments and other business transactions.

Dollar Rate in Open Market

In the open market, the US dollar was available at Rs 278.50 for buying. The selling rate stood at Rs 278.70.

The small difference between the two markets suggests relatively stable currency market conditions. However, exchange rates can change during the day. Rates may also vary among different exchange companies.

Factors Affecting the Rupee

Several factors can influence the value of the Pakistani rupee. These include import payments, external debt servicing and global dollar movements.

Foreign exchange inflows also play an important role. Remittances, exports and external financing can affect the supply of dollars in the domestic market.

A rise in import demand can increase pressure on the rupee. Higher demand for foreign currency may also affect exchange rates.

Impact on Import Costs

The dollar rate is important for Pakistan’s import sector. Many imported goods and raw materials are priced in foreign currency.

Machinery, energy products and industrial inputs can also be affected by currency movements. A weaker rupee can increase the cost of these imports.

A stable rupee, however, gives businesses greater certainty. Importers can plan their payments and estimate costs more easily.

Impact on Overseas Pakistanis

The dollar rate also matters to overseas Pakistanis. When the dollar gains value against the rupee, foreign currency converts into more rupees.

This can increase the rupee value of remittances sent to families in Pakistan. However, higher inflation can reduce the benefit of a weaker rupee.

For this reason, the dollar rate is only one part of the wider economic picture. Inflation, household costs and overall economic conditions also matter.

Remittances and Foreign Exchange

Remittances remain an important source of foreign exchange for Pakistan. Money sent by overseas Pakistanis supports the country’s external account.

It also helps strengthen foreign exchange availability. Higher remittance inflows can support import payments and improve market liquidity.

Encouraging remittances through legal banking and exchange channels therefore remains important for currency market stability.

What Could Happen Next?

The future direction of the rupee will depend on several economic factors. Export performance, remittances and import demand will remain important.

External financing and debt payments will also influence foreign exchange conditions. Global economic developments could affect the dollar as well.

If foreign exchange inflows remain stable, the rupee could continue to show relative stability. However, currency rates can change quickly when market conditions shift.

US Dollar Rate Today

According to the latest available rates, the dollar is trading at:

  • Interbank buying: Rs 277.55
  • Interbank selling: Rs 278.05
  • Open market buying: Rs 278.50
  • Open market selling: Rs 278.70

Exchange rates may vary slightly between different exchange companies. The rates can also change during the trading day.

Consumers, businesses and overseas Pakistanis should therefore check the latest market rates before making currency-related transactions. Daily changes should also be viewed alongside inflation, trade figures and other economic indicators.
