The difference in the rates in the two markets indicates that there is no unusual difference between the demand and supply of dollars in the currency market at the moment. However, import payments, servicing of external debts, the value of the dollar in the global market and the inflow of foreign exchange into the country may affect the direction of the rupee in the future.

The dollar rate is important for the Pakistani economy because payments related to imported goods, raw materials, machinery and some energy are directly or indirectly linked to foreign currency. A continued appreciation of the dollar could increase import costs, which could have an impact on business costs and the prices of some goods.

On the other hand, a relatively stable rupee provides some predictability for the import sector. Businesses can estimate their import costs and future payments relatively easily, although global commodity prices and other external factors also affect overall costs.

The dollar rate is also of particular importance to overseas Pakistanis. When the dollar appreciates against the Pakistani rupee, the same dollar amount sent from abroad can be converted into more rupees in Pakistan. This can have an impact on the local income and spending of families in Pakistan.

However, there is another side to this. If the rupee weakens, some of the additional rupees coming in from abroad may be affected by rising prices. Therefore, for overseas Pakistanis, it is not enough to look only at the dollar-rupee rate, but inflation and the overall economic conditions in the country are also important.

Remittances are an important source of foreign exchange for Pakistan. The remittances sent by Pakistanis living abroad play a role in supporting the country’s external account, foreign exchange reserves and import payment capacity. That is why stability in the currency market and encouragement of remittances through legal channels remain economically important.

According to experts, the sustainable strength of the rupee depends not only on the daily rate of the dollar but also on exports, remittances, import demand, external financing and overall economic discipline. If foreign exchange inflows remain stable and external payment pressures are under control, the scope for stability for the rupee can also increase.

According to current rates, the dollar is between 277.55 and 278.05 rupees in the interbank market and 278.60 and 278.75 rupees in the open market. Rates may vary slightly among different exchange companies and are also possible to change according to market conditions during the day.

It is more useful for consumers, business people, and overseas Pakistanis monitoring the currency market to look at the latest rates as well as the overall direction of the rupee and domestic economic data, as minor daily changes do not always provide a complete picture of the underlying trend of the economy.
