Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has officially started the process of collecting annual income tax returns for the tax year 2026. The agency has asked all eligible taxpayers to submit their returns within the stipulated period and ensure complete accuracy in providing financial information.

According to the FBR, taxpayers can submit their income tax returns from today, while the last date for filing returns has been fixed as September 30, 2026. The agency has clarified that timely submission of returns can fulfil the legal obligation and also avoid unnecessary problems.

Tax authorities have stressed that income, expenses, assets, investments and other relevant financial details should be entered correctly and completely in the return. Incorrect or incomplete information can not only affect the scrutiny of the return but may also require clarification or additional action later.

The FBR has the legal authority to scrutinise the returns submitted under the Income Tax Ordinance. During this process, the agency can review information available in various government databases, which may include information related to property, bank accounts, vehicle ownership, travel records and other financial transactions. The aim is to ensure transparency in the tax system and verification of accurate information.

Tax officials say that a large number of new business people are expected to register this year due to a special scheme introduced by the government for small traders. It is estimated that about 3 million small traders can be included in the tax net, which will help promote the documentary economy and broaden the revenue base.

According to economists, expanding the tax net can help increase government revenues, strengthen financial discipline and make the economy more buoyant. They say that timely return filing and provision of accurate financial information are of fundamental importance to promote voluntary tax compliance.

The FBR has once again appealed to all eligible individuals to submit their income tax returns as soon as possible instead of waiting for the deadline so that legal requirements can be met on time and transparency and trust in the tax system can be further strengthened.
