PSX Today: KSE-100 closes marginally lower

August 24, 2026

Karachi: The Pakistan Stock Exchange witnessed a volatile trading session as the KMI-30 index closed lower despite strong gains in select stocks.
The benchmark index started the day at 221,533 points and climbed sharply during the session, reaching a high of 226,479 points.
However, selling pressure later pushed the market downward, resulting in a closing level of 221,927 points.

The overall decline of 1,792 points reflects cautious investor sentiment as traders responded to economic and sector-specific developments.
Among the biggest gainers, Engro Holdings led the market rally with a contribution of 1,115 points. Technology firm Systems Limited also posted significant gains.

The fertilizer sector also provided support through Engro Fertilizers, while Attock Refinery and GlaxoSmithKline Pakistan recorded smaller positive contributions.

Meanwhile, heavy losses were seen in cement, oil, and banking sectors.

Lucky Cement emerged as the biggest dragger on the index. Energy giants OGDC and HUBC also contributed to the decline.

Banking stock Meezan Bank and energy firm Pakistan Petroleum Limited further weighed on the market.

Market experts say such fluctuations are common in stock markets where investors constantly adjust their portfolios in response to economic signals.
They believe that improved macroeconomic indicators, stable inflation, and investor confidence could support the stock market in the coming months.
