Lahore – The federal government has slightly increased the prices of petroleum products, under which petrol has become more expensive by 45 paise and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs 1.16 per litre. The new prices will be implemented from August 14, 2026.
The price of petrol has been increased from Rs 324.98 paise to Rs 325.43 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel has increased from Rs 382.79 paise to Rs 383.95 per litre. The latest revision has been made by OGRA under the existing petroleum pricing mechanism.
According to the Petroleum Division, the new prices will be effective from Friday, August 14. Thus, a slight increase in the prices of both petrol and diesel in the country on the occasion of Independence Day will be passed on to the consumers.
The latest decision has increased the price of diesel more than petrol. Petrol has increased by 45 paise per litre, while diesel has become more expensive by Rs 1.16. Although the per-litre change is limited, the increase in diesel prices could impact freight transport and the costs of sectors where high-speed diesel is widely used.
Changes in the price of petrol directly affect consumers of private cars, motorcycles, rickshaws and other small vehicles. On the other hand, diesel is mainly used in heavy transport, agricultural machinery and some industrial and power generation units, so its price fluctuations can also be linked to supply chain costs.
The recent frequent changes in petroleum prices in Pakistan are being made against the backdrop of uncertainty regarding global oil prices and energy supply in the region. The government has made progress this year towards making the pricing mechanism more dynamic so that changes in the global market can be transmitted to local prices relatively quickly.
Recent data also shows that local fuel prices have changed in different directions within a few days. On August 8, the government had reduced the price of petrol by Rs 2.20 per litre and diesel by Rs 1.50 per litre, after which the prices were fixed at Rs 327.62 per litre and Rs 380.86 per litre, respectively.
On August 13, the price of petrol was Rs 324.98 per litre, while the price of diesel was Rs 382.79 per litre. As a result of the latest decision, the prices of both the products have increased again.
Taxes and duties imposed by the government on petroleum products also play a significant role in the overall price structure. According to the latest report, taxes and duties are levied on petrol at Rs 114 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs 100 per litre.
Despite the recent increase being modest, the relatively high price of diesel is important for the business sector, as changes in transport costs can ultimately affect the cost of delivering goods and some services. However, given the limited level of the current increase, it would not be appropriate to immediately conclude that there will be a large-scale increase in prices.
After the implementation of the new prices, petrol will be available at Rs. 325.43 per litre and high-speed diesel at Rs. 383.95 per litre. The future price trend may be influenced by various factors, including global crude oil prices, import costs, rupee appreciation and government revenues.
