Lahore: New medical research has revealed that a diet rich in potassium, especially bananas, can significantly reduce the risk of heart diseases.

Experts from Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark studied 1,200 heart patients who had defibrillators installed in their bodies and had low potassium levels. Experts advised the patients to increase potassium through diet, while some were also provided with supplements and medicines. According to the results, patients whose potassium levels became normal or high were found to have a 24% lower risk of irregular heartbeat, heart failure, or death.

The study showed that potassium is essential for heart function. It is naturally present in abundance in bananas, avocados, cabbage, beets, and spinach. According to the researchers, everyone should consume more potassium to combat the negative effects of modern-day salty foods.

The human body has evolved for centuries on a diet low in sodium and high in potassium, but today the situation is the opposite. He said that increasing potassium in the diet could be beneficial not only for heart disease patients but also for the general public.

Speaking at the European Society of Cardiology conference, he stressed that increasing potassium is a cheap, natural, and easy way to improve heart health, so we should reduce sodium in our diet and increase potassium.
