Islamabad: In a sharp and unyielding address, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday launched a scathing critique of India’s regional conduct, accusing New Delhi of orchestrating “water terrorism” and attempting to undermine regional stability. Speaking at the Institute of Strategic Studies’ anniversary event in Islamabad, Dar unequivocally stated that India’s attempts to “hold 24 crore Pakistanis hostage” through its water policies were unacceptable, asserting that India cannot unilaterally dictate its will to Pakistan.

Ishaq Dar specifically highlighted India’s alleged “false flag operation” following the Pahalgam incident, which he contended India used as a pretext for aggression against Pakistan. He reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering stance that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, a cornerstone of water sharing between the two nations, stressing Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to its sovereignty and territorial integrity. “We delivered an immediate and effective response to Indian aggression,” Ishaq Dar affirmed, underscoring Pakistan’s resolve in the face of perceived threats.

The Deputy Prime Minister underscored the escalating concern over India’s reported use of water as a weapon. He also reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position on Kashmir, emphasizing it as an internationally recognized dispute whose peaceful resolution is vital for regional peace. Ishaq Dar accused India of blatant violations of international law in its handling of the Kashmir issue.

Beyond the immediate bilateral tensions, Ishaq Dar painted a broader picture of Pakistan’s responsible role on the global stage. He affirmed Pakistan’s consistent support for Iran’s legitimate position, advocating for a negotiated settlement to Iran’s nuclear issue. He welcomed the Iran-Israel ceasefire and expressed deep concern over the “humanitarian atrocities” in Gaza, highlighting Pakistan’s anxiety over the recent Middle East situation.

In a forward-looking statement, Ishaq Dar also lauded the strengthening of the “Pak-China strategic partnership,” signaling a continued alignment with Beijing as a cornerstone of Pakistan’s foreign policy and a pillar of regional stability. His comprehensive address showcased Pakistan’s multifaceted approach to foreign policy, balancing assertive diplomacy on critical issues with a commitment to regional cooperation and global responsibility.
