Hazrat Abbas (AS): A Shining Symbol of Loyalty, Courage and Sacrifice

By: Ghazala Mazhar Sahito Hyderabad, Sindh

The story of Karbala cannot be told without mentioning Hazrat Abbas (AS). Karbala was not merely the story of a battle. It became a timeless example of loyalty, courage, patience, selflessness and sacrifice, leaving humanity with a profound distinction between truth and falsehood. Within this historic narrative, Hazrat Abbas (AS) stands as a shining symbol of loyalty and sacrifice.

Hazrat Abbas (AS) was the son of Hazrat Ali (AS) and Hazrat Umm al-Banin (AS) and belonged to the noble family of Banu Hashim. His birth is traditionally associated with 4 Sha’ban. He was raised in a household where courage, justice, generosity, devotion and commitment to truth were deeply valued. The upbringing of Hazrat Ali (AS) and the care of Hazrat Umm al-Banin (AS) played an important role in shaping his remarkable character.

Hazrat Abbas (AS) is traditionally known as Qamar Bani Hashim, or the Moon of Banu Hashim. Along with his distinguished appearance, he was renowned for exceptional courage and steadfastness. His bravery and determination became particularly evident at Karbala. Yet, above all, his greatest distinction was his extraordinary loyalty.

At Karbala, Hazrat Abbas (AS) was entrusted with the responsibility of carrying the standard. Bearing the standard was not merely the act of carrying a flag; it represented trust, responsibility and commitment. Hazrat Abbas (AS) fulfilled this responsibility with unwavering loyalty. Neither the difficult circumstances, the encirclement by the opposing forces nor the severe shortage of water could weaken his resolve.

The episode of water at Karbala remains one of the most powerful representations of Hazrat Abbas’s (AS) loyalty and selflessness. Water had become severely scarce in the camp, and the members of the household were suffering from thirst. Traditional accounts relate that Hazrat Abbas (AS) took a water-skin and went towards the Euphrates in an effort to bring water back to the camp.

According to the traditional narrative, even after reaching the Euphrates, Hazrat Abbas’s (AS) selflessness remained evident. It is related that despite his own intense thirst, he placed the needs of Imam Hussain (AS) and the members of the household before his own. Although water was within his reach, bringing it back to the camp was more important to him than satisfying his own thirst.

On his return, Hazrat Abbas (AS) faced fierce resistance. According to traditional accounts, he made every effort to ensure that the water in the water-skin could reach the camp. This episode highlighted the qualities of loyalty, courage and selflessness that have kept his memory alive in the hearts of generations.

It was this profound loyalty that gave Hazrat Abbas (AS) a distinctive place in the history of Karbala. He was himself thirsty, yet he placed the thirst of others before his own needs. He was surrounded by danger, yet he did not abandon his commitment. His sacrifice became an enduring example that true loyalty is demonstrated not merely through words but through actions.

The personality of Hazrat Abbas (AS) also teaches us that true courage is not simply about displaying strength on a battlefield. Real courage means remaining committed to one’s principles in the most difficult circumstances. True loyalty means not abandoning one’s commitment regardless of the situation. True selflessness means giving importance to another person’s needs before one’s own.

Hazrat Abbas’s (AS) presence in the camp of Karbala was a source of courage and reassurance for the members of the household. He was the loyal brother and standard-bearer of Imam Hussain (AS), while traditional Islamic literature also remembers him as a protector of the household and a symbol of loyalty and sacrifice. His character reminds us that the strength of relationships does not depend solely on blood ties; love, trust and loyalty can also give relationships their greatest meaning.

Hazrat Abbas (AS) did not limit loyalty to words; he demonstrated it through his actions. His struggle and sacrifice at Karbala became symbols of his loyalty to Imam Hussain (AS) and his commitment to truth. This is why his name continues to be remembered with respect and devotion centuries later.

Today, remembering Hazrat Abbas (AS) does not merely remind us of a courageous figure at Karbala. It also offers lessons in loyalty, patience, courage, selflessness and steadfastness in the pursuit of truth. His life encourages us to honour our commitments, stand by our loved ones during difficult times, understand the suffering of others and remain steadfast on the path of truth and justice.

Karbala passed into history and generations changed, but the legacy of Hazrat Abbas’s (AS) loyalty remains alive. His story associated with the Euphrates continues to move hearts centuries later. The themes of thirst, loyalty and sacrifice remind us that greatness is found not only in living one’s life, but also in making sacrifices for one’s principles.

The name of Hazrat Abbas (AS) immediately evokes the ideals of loyalty, courage and selflessness. For this reason, he remains not only a shining chapter in history but also an enduring example for those who seek to make truth, loyalty and sacrifice part of their lives. His memory will continue to remind generations to come that those who remain steadfast on the path of truth are never forgotten.
