KSE-100 Climbs Over 1,800 Points Amid Broad-Based Buying at Pakistan Stock Exchange

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Wednesday extended its bullish momentum as strong investor participation pushed the key benchmark index sharply higher, reflecting renewed confidence in the country’s equity market and improving sentiment across major sectors.

The benchmark KSE-100 index closed at 179,571.27 points after gaining 1,878.35 points, representing a gain of 1.06 percent during the trading session. The market opened at 178,115.36 points, touched an intraday high of 179,919.27 points and recorded a low of 177,931.32 points before ending the session near its highest level.

Meanwhile, the KMI-30 index, which tracks Sharia-compliant stocks, also showed a strong performance. The index closed at 256,725.70 points, up 1,936.43 points from the previous session. The index moved between a low of 254,968.94 points and a high of 257,179.58 points, highlighting continued buying interest in Islamic equities.

Market analysts said the latest rally was supported by aggressive institutional buying, optimism over Pakistan’s economic outlook and improving expectations for corporate earnings. Investors were active in the banking, cement, fertilizer and energy sectors, which provided significant support to the overall upward direction of the market.

The performance of the KSE-100 index was largely due to heavyweight stocks. United Bank Limited emerged as the biggest contributor, adding 417.09 points to the benchmark index. Lucky Cement followed with a contribution of 157.97 points, while Service Industries, Pakistan Petroleum Limited and Fauji Fertilizer Company added 104.06 points, 85.67 points and 84.13 points respectively.

On the downside, shares of Attock Refinery, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines, Colgate Palmolive Pakistan, Bank Alfalah and Hub Power Company weighed on the index. However, their negative impact was overshadowed by strong gains in other blue-chip stocks.

Trading activities remained healthy throughout the session. Total volume in the KSE-100 bourses reached 436.67 million shares, indicating continued investor participation and confidence in the market. The strong turnover suggested that buying interest was not limited to a handful of stocks but was spread across several sectors.

The KMI-30 index also recorded strong gains in key Sharia-compliant companies. Lucky Cement emerged as the top contributor with 454.13 points, followed by Pakistan Petroleum Limited, Engro Holdings, Maple Leaf Cement and Fauji Fertilizer Company. These stocks contributed a significant portion of the overall index advance and reflected investors’ preference for fundamentally sound companies.

Market participants noted that expectations regarding macroeconomic stability, easing inflationary pressures and improved financial management continued to support equity valuations. Investors were also encouraged by signs of resilience in Pakistan’s corporate sector despite global economic uncertainty.

The year-to-date performance further highlights the strength of the market. The KSE-100 index has gained 42.94 percent since the beginning of the year, while the KMI-30 index has gained 38.86 percent. Such performance puts Pakistan among the strongest performing equity markets in the region and reflects growing investor confidence in listed companies.

Analysts believe that the market could be a source of interest if economic indicators remain favorable and corporate profit expectations improve further. However, they caution that investors should be mindful of global commodity prices, geopolitical developments and monetary policy decisions that could affect future market direction.

Wednesday’s strong session reinforced the positive momentum that has characterized recent trading on the Pakistan Stock Exchange. With key banking, cement and fertilizer stocks leading the way, the market once again demonstrated its ability to absorb downside pressure and move higher on the back of strong investor demand.

As the KSE-100 index approaches the critical 180,000-point mark, market participants will be closely watching upcoming economic developments and corporate announcements for signals regarding the sustainability of the current rally. For now, however, the latest session has provided another indication that investor confidence remains strong and that the Pakistan Stock Exchange continues to benefit from improving market sentiment and broad-based buying interest.
