Racing Towards Good Deeds: The Blessing of Time and Life

Written by: Dr. Muhammad Waheed-uz-Zaman

The Superior University, Lahore

Allah Almighty has blessed us with countless blessings. Wealth is a blessing, health is a blessing, children are a blessing, and peace is a blessing. Yet there is another blessing that quietly slips away from our hands, and once it is gone, no wealth in the world can bring it back. That blessing is time and life.

The moment that has passed will never return. The morning that has passed has reduced the portion of our life that remains. The reality is that we are not merely passing time; our lives are passing with it.

Translation: By time, indeed mankind is in loss, except those who believe, perform righteous deeds, encourage one another to truth, and encourage one another to patience.

(Surah Al-Asr: 1–3)

The Example of the Ice Seller

There was a person selling ice and calling out to people to have mercy on the one whose capital was melting away. This example makes the reality of human time and life clear. Just as ice continuously melts, a person’s lifespan also decreases with every passing moment.

We should remember that time is not accumulating for us; rather, it is continuously decreasing. Once time has passed, it cannot return.

Every Moment Reduces Our Lifespan

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that many people are deceived regarding two blessings: health and free time.

(Sahih Bukhari: 6412)

When health is available, a person often takes it for granted. When free time is available, it may also be considered ordinary and wasted. But when health is lost or time comes to an end, a person realizes the value of these blessings.

The Neglect of Two Blessings

Health and free time are both great blessings from Allah Almighty. Health gives a person the strength to worship and perform good deeds, while free time gives a person an opportunity to improve their life.

But a person often becomes so involved in responsibilities, desires and worldly activities that the ultimate destination of life is forgotten.

What a Person Says While Healthy

When a person is healthy, they say that there is still plenty of time. They postpone prayer, repentance, charity and good deeds for the future.

But at the time of illness, an accident or sudden death, a person realizes that time was actually very short.

There Is No Guarantee of Tomorrow

None of us can say with certainty that we will be alive tomorrow. That is why good deeds should not be postponed for the future.

Translation: So race towards good deeds.

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 148)

Hasten Towards Good Deeds

Islam teaches people to take the lead in doing good. There is no need to wait for a particular age to do good deeds. If something good can be done today, it should not be left until tomorrow.

A smile, helping someone in need, serving one’s parents, encouraging a troubled person and fulfilling someone’s right are also good deeds.

Is My Prayer Correct?

We should not only think about whether we are offering prayer. We should also consider whether our prayer is preventing us from wrongdoing.

Translation: Indeed, prayer has been prescribed for the believers at specified times.

(Surah An-Nisa: 103)

Prayer is not only an obligation; it is also a means of bringing discipline and righteousness into a person’s life and strengthening their connection with Allah Almighty.

A Blessing and a Test at the Same Time

Life is both a blessing and a test. Allah Almighty has given us time so that we may use it for the right purpose.

While describing the qualities of believers, the Quran states that they stay away from useless and meaningless activities.

Translation: And those who turn away from vain and useless matters.

(Surah Al-Mu’minun: 3)

The Rights of People and the Hereafter

Along with worshipping Allah Almighty, fulfilling the rights of other people is also necessary. Wasting or violating someone’s wealth, dignity, time or rightful due is not a minor matter.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a serious warning concerning the rights of the oppressed and the fulfilment of people’s rights on the Day of Judgment.

(Sahih Muslim: 2581)

Therefore, good deeds are not limited to acts of worship. Justice, good character and fulfilling people’s rights are also part of righteousness.

Think About It Today

Sit quietly sometime and ask yourself how much of your life has actually been spent on beneficial activities. How many hours have passed in things that have no benefit for the Hereafter?

This question can help a person reconsider their priorities.

Have Faith in Allah’s Mercy

If time has been wasted in the past, there is no need to become hopeless. The mercy of Allah Almighty is vast.

Translation: Do not despair of the mercy of Allah.

(Surah Az-Zumar: 53)

The door of repentance is open. A person can begin taking their life in a better direction from today.

Make Three Decisions Today

First Decision: I Will Leave One Sin

Today, decide to leave one habit or sin that is harmful to your life and your Hereafter.

Second Decision: A Consistent Good Deed

Choose one good deed that you can perform daily or regularly. Even a small deed becomes very valuable when it is performed consistently.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah Almighty loves the deed that is done consistently, even if it is small.

(Sahih Bukhari: 6464)

Third Decision: I Will Fulfil One Right

Fulfil the right of someone whose right is due from you. If you need to apologize to someone, apologize today. If you need to help someone, help them today.

Time does not stop for anyone. Life is decreasing with every passing moment. Therefore, instead of postponing good deeds, we should take action today.

May Allah Almighty grant us the ability to perform good deeds and protect us from evil. Ameen.
