According to media reports, sugar prices have seen a sharp increase in the past month in major cities across the country, with prices per kg increasing by Rs 5 to Rs 45.
According to market sources, the price of sugar in Rawalpindi has increased from Rs 185 to Rs 190 per kg, while in the capital, Islamabad, it is being sold at Rs 180 to Rs 185-190 per kg. There has also been a sharp increase in prices in provincial capitals; in Lahore, the price of sugar has increased from Rs 179 to Rs 200 per kg; in Peshawar, it is being sold at Rs 190 to Rs 195; and in Shahr-e-Quaid (Karachi), sugar is also being sold at Rs 190 to Rs 195-200 per kg. In Quetta, sugar prices have also increased from Rs 190 to Rs 195-200 per kg.
However, market sources say that the biggest difference was felt by the residents of Faisalabad, where the highest increase of Rs 45 was recorded in the price of sugar, and it increased from Rs 185 to Rs 230 per kg, while in Multan, sugar is being sold at Rs 200 per kg.
Due to these extraordinary increases, the common citizens are facing severe difficulties, especially at a time when the prices of 24 other essential commodities have also increased.
