Islamabad: In a significant development for electricity consumers, NEPRA has completed a public hearing on the request for fuel charges for the month of September. The hearing was chaired by Law Member Amna Ahmed, and included a wide range of representatives: CPPA-G, DISCOS, Ministry of Energy, business communities, journalists and the public.
The petitioner CPPA-G had proposed a reduction of about 37 paisa per unit under the Fuel Price Adjustment, and this reduction has been offered to be effective for a period of only one month. The reduction will be applicable to consumers of the DISCOs, except those who are eligible for the Lifeline tariff, Protected Consumers, Prepaid Consumers or Electric Vehicle Charging Stations.
A Nepra spokesperson said that the authority has taken detailed feedback from all relevant stakeholders and will now issue a final decision after examining further data. On the other hand, DISCOs have explained that fuel price adjustments depend on fuel prices, changes in generation mix, and global fuel availability; when prices are lower, consumers can benefit from reduced bills.
This hearing and the possible reduction are welcome for consumers, and now it is to be seen when Nepra issues a final decision and how the rollout will be for consumers.
