President Putin Pledges Unwavering Support to Iran’s New Leadership in Nowruz Message

Moscow – Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a strong signal of diplomatic solidarity to Tehran, reaffirming that Moscow will remain a “loyal friend and reliable partner” to the Islamic Republic.

In a formal message marking Nowruz, the Persian New Year, the Kremlin confirmed that Putin extended his warmest wishes to Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, and President Masoud Pezeshkian. The Russian President expressed his deep respect for the Iranian people, wishing them the “strength and dignity” required to navigate the current “severe trials” facing the nation.

The timing of the message is particularly significant, as Russia has grown increasingly vocal in its criticism of recent military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iranian targets.

Moscow has characterised these actions as a “cynical” escalation that has pushed the Middle East to the brink of a total regional collapse and triggered a global energy crisis. President Putin also took the opportunity to once again condemn the assassination of the previous Supreme Leader, describing the act as “cold-blooded” and a violation of international norms.

Despite the warm rhetoric, geopolitical analysts point out that the practical extent of Russian intervention remains a subject of debate. While a 20-year comprehensive strategic partnership treaty was ratified between the two nations in 2025, it notably lacks a formal mutual defence clause that would mandate Russian military involvement.

Furthermore, Moscow continues to balance its alliance with its own strategic interests, maintaining a firm stance against nuclear proliferation in the region. As Iran faces what some internal sources call its greatest challenge since 1979, the world is watching closely to see if Putin’s “loyal friendship” will evolve from diplomatic statements into more tangible military or economic support.
