Pakistan Inflation Update March 2026: CPI Rises to 7.30% as Monthly Prices Surge

ISLAMABAD — The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Wednesday released its monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, revealing a significant jump in inflationary pressure across the country for March 2026. According to the official data, the monthly inflation rate witnessed a sharp increase of 1.18% compared to February 2026, pushing the annual (Year-on-Year) inflation rate to 7.30%.

While the 7.30% figure reflects a rise from February’s 6.98%, it notably remains below the Ministry of Finance’s initial projections. The ministry had estimated inflation for March to hover between 7.5% and 8.5%. However, the ground reality for citizens remains challenging as the average inflation for the first nine months of the current fiscal year (July 2025 to March 2026) has been recorded at 5.67%.

A deeper look at the urban-rural divide shows that city dwellers are bearing a slightly heavier brunt. Annual inflation in urban areas was recorded at 7.39%, with a monthly increase of 1.34%. In contrast, rural areas saw an annual inflation rate of 7.17%, with a monthly uptick of 0.96%. This disparity is largely attributed to higher costs of services and transport in metropolitan hubs.

Economists are closely monitoring the trend. “The jump from 6.98% to 7.30% indicates that the period of low inflation witnessed last year—where March 2025 stood at a mere 0.7%—is firmly behind us,” noted a senior market analyst. The primary drivers for this month’s surge include the rising costs of fuel and essential food commodities, which have a cascading effect on the entire supply chain.

As the fiscal year enters its final quarter, the focus shifts to whether the government can maintain inflation within the single-digit range amidst global economic volatility.
