Islamabad Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has formally approved the phased elimination of the role of meter readers in all power distribution companies (DSCOs) across the country. This decision has been made under a new digital system in which citizens will now read their own electricity meters. The government is soon going to introduce an automated mobile app called “Apna Meter, Apni Reading,” which will allow consumers to enter meter readings themselves.

In a high-level meeting to be held on June 17, 2025, the Prime Minister directed the Power Division to develop this new app in national and regional languages so that every section of society benefits. In the initial phase of this modern system, a “soft launch” will be done so that any technical glitches can be identified. The government has allocated Rs 316 million for this project.

Karachi Electric is currently exempt from this project. The Power Division has been directed to prepare a complete implementation plan within a month. The responsibility of developing and monitoring the applications has been entrusted to PITC and MEPCO. The proposed mobile solutions include “Power Smart App,” “Apna Meter, Apna Reading,” CCMS, and Lineman Mobile App, which will be released to the public after thorough testing.

This initiative will not only promote transparency but will also help in the redressal of power theft, reading errors, and complaints, which will directly benefit the common consumer.
