Islamabad: The government has finally paid attention to the problems of common consumers related to electricity bills. According to sources in the Ministry of Energy, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been informed that consumers are out of the protected category if they use just one unit more, i.e. 201 units, after which they have to pay an additional bill of up to Rs 5,000 per month for the next six months.

Taking serious note of the situation, the Prime Minister has directed the formation of a high-level committee, which will consider proposals to increase the protected limit from 200 to 300 units in the next few days.

Sources claim that NEPRA and the Ministry of Power had deliberately implemented the 201-unit slab, which caused severe financial pressure on the lower middle class.

In light of the committee’s suggestions, a new system will likely be implemented in which consumers will not remain permanently unprotected once they reach 201 units, but the additional rate will be applicable only for that month.

If the government takes steps in this direction, this change could be a big relief for millions of domestic consumers.
