Islamabad: The possibility of further increase in electricity bills for the people suffering from inflation has emerged, as a proposal has been made to increase the price of electricity in December monthly fuel charges adjustment. The Central Power Purchasing Agency has requested NEPRA to allow the collection of additional cost from consumers.
According to officials, if this proposal is approved, electricity will become expensive by about 48 paise per unit, which will be implemented for one month. This increase may affect all domestic, commercial and industrial consumers.
According to December data, more than 8 billion units of electricity were generated in the country, most of which was supplied to distribution companies. The average cost of electricity per unit this month was Rs 9.62, which was determined by the ratio of fuel prices and production from various sources.
According to sources, nuclear energy continued to have the largest share in electricity production, while a significant amount of electricity was also generated from dams and hydropower sources. In addition, electricity was also generated from local and imported sources of coal and gas, however, the overall cost of production increased due to the high cost of imported fuel.
Energy experts say that the increase in fuel prices in the global market puts an additional burden on consumers through fuel adjustments. This is the reason why electricity rates fluctuate every month.
Nepra will hold a public hearing on the matter tomorrow, after which the final decision will be made. After the decision, it will be clear how much extra consumers will have to pay next month.
Authorities have advised consumers to be careful in using electricity and adopt energy-saving methods so that the effects of the possible increase can be reduced.
