Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has issued a decision to increase electricity prices by 8 paisa per unit for August, after which this increase will be applicable to consumers across the country.
According to government policy guidelines, this decision will also be applicable to K-Electric consumers. The NEPRA notification states that the additional recovery will be made in October bills.
This increase was made on the request of the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA), which stated that 102.94 billion units of electricity were supplied during August while the cost remained at Rs7.50 per unit compared to Rs7.31 per unit.
According to the data, the cost of generating electricity from furnace oil in August was recorded at Rs 33 per unit, from LNG at Rs 21.73 per unit and from gas at Rs 13.43 per unit.
Similarly, the cost of generating electricity from local coal was Rs 12.01 and from imported coal at Rs 14.07 per unit. According to officials, electricity imported from Iran was the most expensive, with a cost of Rs 41 per unit.
Energy analysts say that the current increase is modest, but it will definitely put some financial pressure on consumers. According to them, if oil and gas prices remain stable in the global market, there is a possibility of a reduction in electricity rates in the coming months.
