Chief Minister’s strict accountability over Lahore tragedy, senior officers dismissed and arrested

Lahore: The tragic incident that took place in the Bhati Gate area due to lack of safety measures has become a question mark on the performance of the provincial administration. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz called the incident “the worst example of administrative failure” and initiated immediate accountability.

Addressing a special meeting held at the airport lounge, she said that despite the presence of ten departments, no one had an answer. “Clear instructions are given in every meeting that no manhole should remain open, yet why did this negligence happen?” the Chief Minister raised tough questions.

He said that the protection of lives and property of citizens is the first responsibility of the government and the loss of two precious lives due to the negligence of institutions is unacceptable. The IG Police was directed to register cases against all those responsible for the project and arrest them.

The Chief Minister also made it clear that full sympathy will be shown to the affected family and financial assistance will be provided so that they get immediate relief.

Urban development experts say that the safety audit and monitoring system during the growing construction projects in Lahore is weak. According to the experts, “If constant monitoring and technology like Safe City cameras are used effectively, such accidents can be prevented.”

They further said that arrests alone are not enough, but a system of continuous reforms, transparency and strict monitoring must be established.
