Central Punjab under flood threat, water levels in Chenab and Sutlej rivers high

Lahore: The central districts of Punjab, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Chiniot and Jhang are under flood threat. According to the PDMA, a large inflow of the Tawi River from occupied Jammu will join the Chenab River in the next 24 hours, which is expected to cause medium to high level flooding in the Chenab River.

The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has warned that the water level in the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers, as well as their connected tributaries, is rising rapidly. A high level flood situation has arisen at the Ganda Singhwala point of the Sutlej River, while medium level flooding has been recorded at Head Sulemanki.

PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia has directed the district administrations of Sialkot and Gujrat to remain on high alert and make arrangements for timely evacuation from low-lying areas.

According to experts, if the rains continue, more districts of Punjab may also be at risk of flooding, which is likely to cause serious damage to agriculture and the rural economy.
