Additional burden on electricity consumers likely, DISCOs request to recover over Rs 35 billion from NEPRA

Islamabad: Electricity consumers across the country are likely to see an increase in electricity bills in the coming months as power distribution companies (DISCOs) have submitted applications to NEPRA for approval of additional collections of billions of rupees. According to sources, these applications have been filed under the second quarter adjustment of the financial year and capacity charges.
According to the documents, DISCOs have sought permission to collect Rs 10.83 billion from consumers, which will be collected under the quarterly adjustment of October to December 2025. The final rate of increase per unit will be determined by the NEPRA authority after the hearing, as a result of which changes in electricity tariffs are expected.
In addition, the companies have also submitted an application to collect another Rs 24.25 billion in capacity charges. Officials say that these expenses are necessary to maintain the availability of power plants and the efficiency of the system, but this may put an additional burden on the monthly bills of consumers.
Interestingly, a reduction of about Rs 1.65 billion has also been shown in operations and maintenance expenses, which will be adjusted in the overall accounting. Despite this reduction, the overall volume of collections is quite large.
Sources say that the proposed quarterly adjustment will be applied not only to government discos but also to K-Electric customers, which may affect electricity consumers in various cities of the country, including Karachi.
Nepra has scheduled a regular hearing on this matter on February 17, where all stakeholders will present their views. Experts say that if approved, a significant increase in electricity bills may be seen.
