Gujranwala: In a significant development, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has disclosed that President Asif Ali Zardari supports his stance on the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). Addressing a press conference in Gujranwala, Maulana Fazlur Rehman urged the government to prioritize journalists’ recommendations and avoid unilateral decision-making.
“Journalists’ voices must be heard before finalizing the PECA Act. Dialogue and collaboration are the only way to address such critical issues,” he emphasized. He also called for the inclusion of opposition parties in the negotiation process, though he noted that the final decision rests with the opposition.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman shared that he recently met with a delegation of journalists in Islamabad to discuss concerns about the PECA Act. He criticized the government for bypassing stakeholders and stressed the need for a more inclusive approach.
The JUI-F chief further revealed that he had a phone conversation with President Zardari, during which the President reportedly agreed to consider journalists’ suggestions regarding the Act.
