General Asim Munir was promoted to the rank of field marshal.

ISLAMABAD – The government of Pakistan has approved the promotion of Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military) to the rank of field marshal. He is the second person in Pakistan’s history to receive this highest military award. Before him, only President General Ayub Khan was made a field marshal in 1959.

According to ISPR, Field Marshal Asim Munir thanked the Almighty Allah for this honor and dedicated it to the nation and the forces of Pakistan, especially the martyrs and ghazis. He thanked President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and the federal cabinet for their trust and said that this honor does not belong to an individual but to the entire nation and the forces of Pakistan.

The promotion to the rank of field marshal is given for decisively defeating the enemy in Operation “Baniyan Mursos” and demonstrating superior tactics. The rank is higher than the general of the army and is considered the most senior military rank with five stars, awarded for exceptional and exemplary military leadership.

The decision is being hailed by the nation as an important milestone in Pakistan’s military history.
