Pakistan government debt reaches Rs 79,322 billion as of January 2026: State Bank

Islamabad: According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the total debt of the government of Pakistan has increased to Rs 79,322 billion as of January 2026.


According to data released by the state bank, the government’s domestic debt increased by Rs 615 billion during this period, after which it increased to Rs 55,978 billion.


Similarly, an increase was also seen in external debt. According to the State Bank, the government’s external debt has increased by Rs 178 billion to Rs 23,344 billion.


According to the data, the government has obtained a total additional debt of Rs 1,434 billion during the first seven months of the current fiscal year.


According to economists, the increasing debt indicates the government’s fiscal challenges and measures to increase economic policies, increase revenue and reduce expenditure will prove important in the coming months.
