Employment Opportunities in Pakistan: Services Sector Leading, Industrial Sector Lagging

Karachi: According to the National Labour Force Survey 2023-2024, the unemployment rate in Pakistan has reached 7.1 per cent; this rate has increased by 0.8 per cent in the last five years. Currently, about 8 million people are unemployed

According to the survey data, the country’s total population is 241.49 million, of which 3.3% of people are deprived of work opportunities.

Sector-wise details

  • Services sector: 31.83 million people, employment rate 41.7%
  • Agricultural sector: 25.53 million people, employment rate 33.1%
  • Industrial sector: 19.86 million people, employment rate 25.7%

Wage overview

According to the survey, the average monthly wage per capita is Rs. 39,042, an average increase of Rs. 15,014 in the last five years. The average wage of men is Rs. 39,302, while that of women is Rs. 37,347.

Expert Opinion

According to economists:

“This survey shows that there are more job opportunities in the services sector, while there is a need for more investment and job creation in the industrial sector.”
