Punjab Government’s Urban Transport Revolution;  Tram in Lahore, metro train decided in Faisalabad and Gujranwala

Lahore, Punjab: Making significant progress in the field of urban transport, the provincial government has announced that the tram service in Lahore will be started from February 2026, which will initially serve on the Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspora route. Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar said that the trial phase of the tram system has been successfully completed and the 270-seater tram will cost $3 million.

He further said that a final decision has also been taken to start metro train services in Faisalabad and Gujranwala. The main objective of these measures is to reduce traffic pressure in big cities and control environmental pollution.

It should be noted that recently, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took a test ride in the country’s first Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SRT) train. Terming it a historic development for Punjab, she said that under this modern transport system, not only will the public be provided with comfortable travel facilities but there will also be a significant reduction in air pollution.

According to the spokesperson of the Punjab government, the SRT train is currently running successfully in many countries including Turkey, China, Abu Dhabi. The latest train has a capacity of 320 passengers and can cover a distance of 40 kilometers after charging. The government says that the continuity of such projects will be maintained keeping in mind the future urban needs.
