NEPRA’s tariff decisions a threat to energy reforms and investment: Ministry of Energy

ISLAMABAD — The Federal Ministry of Energy has expressed strong reservations over the tariff-related decisions of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) as a threat to the financial sustainability of the energy sector.

According to Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari, delays and unbalanced decisions in NEPRA’s policy-making not only affect the government’s subsidy structure but can also set back reform initiatives. He said that in the current circumstances, such decisions are negatively affecting the energy investment environment in the country.

The Ministry of Energy indicated that NEPRA’s unilateral decisions could destabilize the uniform tariff system in the future, while additional financial burden could also be imposed on consumers. The non-approval of the generation tariff pending since December 2024 and other policies are delayed, which requires urgent action.
