Sialkot: Senator Professor Sajid Mir, the Amir of the Central Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith Pakistan and a senior leader of the PML-N, has died at the age of 86. According to family sources, he was ill for some time and died of a heart attack this morning at his ancestral home in Sialkot.
Prof. Sajid Mir was born on 2 October 1938 in Sialkot. He holds a master’s degree in English literature and Islamology from the University of Punjab. He served as the Amir of the main Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith since 1987 and was first elected as a Senator on a PML-N ticket in 1994. Later, he was elected to the Senate six times and headed various important committees, including religious affairs, science and technology, and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
Professor Sajid Mir devoted his life to the service of Islam, the promotion of knowledge and understanding, and the unity of the Muslim Brotherhood in Pakistan. Among his works is “Christianity: A Study and Analysis.” He also had close relations with the rulers of Saudi Arabia, which contributed to the strengthening of relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
His death was widely mourned in political, social, and religious circles across the country. President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz, Amir Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, Siraj-ul-Haq, Liaquat Baloch, and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur-Rehman expressed deep sorrow at his death. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that Sajid Mir’s death has created a void in Pakistan’s political landscape that can hardly be filled.
He has left behind a wife, two sons and a daughter.
